He is the author of the bestselling book Cool Gray City of Love: 49 Views of San Francisco and the history column "Portals of the Past" (soon to be a podcast) which appears every other Saturday in the San Francisco Chronicle. He was a co-founder and longtime executive editor of the groundbreaking web site Salon.com, and the former executive editor of San Francisco Magazine.
